When Should You See a Doctor for Your Child’s Fever?

Most fevers are harmless, but some signs mean your child should be seen by a doctor. Here is what to watch for.

Fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring their children to the doctor. In most cases, it is the body’s natural way of fighting an infection.

See a doctor if your child:

  • Is under 3 months old with a temperature of 38°C or higher
  • Has a fever lasting more than 3 days
  • Is unusually sleepy, irritable or hard to wake
  • Has difficulty breathing, a rash, or a stiff neck
  • Is not drinking or has fewer wet nappies

At home

Keep your child comfortable, offer plenty of fluids and use fever medicine at the right dose for their weight. Avoid bundling them up in heavy clothes.

Trust your instincts — if you are worried, it is always fine to have your child checked.
